When burgundy and fashion are said in the same sentence, most guys typically visualize Ron Burgundy and his 1970s fashion style. But forty years later, various shades of red have taken center stage as the new favorite fall colors.
We have our own shades of red as well — appropriately named Merlot and Bordeaux — so we put together some of our favorite looks, and style tips, to show how you can add red to your wardrobe this fall.
The easiest starting point to integrate a bit of autumnal red is to start with a shirt. A muted red shade such as our Exeter Bordeaux becomes the statement piece of our outfit, so dress it down with stone-colored chinos and neutral boots.
For the adventure-seekers looking for a bolder shade, our Donovan Microcord comes in a Merlot color that’s richer and deeper in red hue. We’d recommend the same outfit idea: pair it with stone chinos or dark denim and let the red do the talking. As a bonus, the Donovan comes with our coolest button yet: a brown corozo nut fisheye button. It’s the perfect brown accent that really anchors this shirt as a made-for-fall piece.
For those who prefer their tops in a different shade, a dark burgundy pant offers another way to add a bit of fall colortone in a subdued yet stylish manner.
We developed our Martin 5-pocket corduroy pants specifically from a stylish starting point: as a dark burgundy color, it exudes confidence without being over-the-top. A 5-pocket design makes it wear more like denim than chinos, and the soft corduroy fabric adds just the right texture and warmth for chillier days.
Our favorite look? Pair it with a navy top, preferably a light jacket or a sweater, along with earth-tone shoes such as chukka boots. The navy will help the outfit by keeping the burgundy color muted, but we can’t promise the same for the compliments you’ll get on the weekend or in a casual office environment.
