Drink Better: How to Make an Old-Fashioned

If there is one drink you should know how to make, it is this classic.

A strong, straightforward drink, the Old-Fashioned has been the perfect leisure companion since the early 1800s (it was actually a “before-work” companion back then by the way…tip of the hat to you, America). As your more successful weekday’s comes to a close, here is a step-by-step guide on how to make a Trumaker favorite.

STEP 1: Select a bourbon

We went with Johnny Drum. In our opinion, it’s one of the best kept secrets in regards to whiskey.

STEP 2: Measure and pour 2 ounces of bourbon.

STEP 3: Crush and add a sugar cube, or pour a bit of simple syrup

Syrup is a little easier because it doesn’t clump like sugar can.

STEP 4: Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.

A small dash of bitters adds depth and complexity to a drink, enlivening an otherwise flat combination. They’re used to accent a cocktail, not to dominate it.

STEP 5: Stir to perfection.

STEP 6: Add a garnish (we used lemon peel) and gently squeeze the oils into the glass

This adds a bit more acidity and flavor.
