Drink Better: How to Make a Manhattan

Each sip of this classic will bring thoughts of American flags, baseball, and chewing tobacco.

The Manhattan is a cocktail favorite for good reason. This is the perfect drink for catching up with an old friend or after seeing every relative you have at Thanksgiving dinner. A rich blend of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, the Manhattan has an aroma that can be recognized almost immediately.

And as the first drink to make use of vermouth as a modifier, the Manhattan truly is the granddaddy of American cocktails. With the help of our local bartender friend, we’ll take you step-by-step in making this great drink.

STEP 1: Pour 2 Ounces of Rye Whiskey.

We decided to use Willett. Light bodied, but a strong barrel strength whiskey, we highly recommend it.

STEP 2: Add 1 Ounce of Sweet Vermouth.

We used Antica Formula. It’s richer and more complex than most red vermouths and makes one hell of a Manhattan.

STEP 3: Add a dash of Bitters.

STEP 4: Stir.

STEP 5: Pour.

STEP 6: Add a Cherry.

The cherry complements flavors in the whiskey and vermouth.

STEP 7: Drink & Repeat.
